Pension Credit: Eligibility Possible With Savings or Home Ownership

Understanding Pension Credit

Pension Credit is a benefit for people who have reached State Pension age and have a low income. It is separate from the State Pension and consists of two parts: Guarantee Credit, which tops up your assessed weekly income, and Savings Credit, an extra payment for some who reached State Pension age before April 2016.

Current Rates for 2026/27

The standard Guarantee Credit lifts a single person’s assessed weekly income up to £238, or £363.25 for a couple (combined). For example, a single person with £210 a week in assessable income would receive a £28 weekly top‑up, amounting to £1,456 over a year.

How the calculation works

This illustrative example shows the mechanics, not a typical award. Actual payments depend on individual circumstances, including any additional amounts you may qualify for.

Who Can Claim?

To be eligible in England, Scotland and Wales you must have reached State Pension age and meet the residence rules. Northern Ireland operates a separate scheme. If you have a partner, their income and savings are included, and usually both partners must have reached State Pension age, though exceptions exist.

Assets, Savings and Private Pensions

Owning your home

Living in the home you own does not automatically disqualify you. Other properties or assets should be declared on the application.

Savings and investments

The first £10,000 of savings is ignored. Every £500 (or part thereof) above that threshold is treated as £1 of weekly income for the calculation. For instance, £11,000 in savings adds an assumed £2 weekly income. Having more than £10,000 does not rule you out.

Private and workplace pensions

These normally count as income alongside your State Pension. Certain disability‑related benefits – such as Attendance Allowance, Personal Independence Payment and Pension Age Disability Payment – are not counted as income. Even if you have not claimed a pension you are entitled to, the amount you could receive may still be considered.

Additional Amounts That May Apply

Depending on your situation you could qualify for extra payments:

  • Carer addition – £48.15 a week in 2026/27, available through an underlying entitlement to Carer’s Allowance or Carer Support Payment.
  • Severe disability addition – £86.05 a week when qualifying conditions are met.
  • Savings Credit – up to £17.96 a week for a single person or £20.10 for a couple, subject to its own eligibility rules.

What Pension Credit Can Unlock

An award may help you access further support, often requiring a separate application:

  • Housing Benefit if you rent.
  • Council Tax Reduction via your local council.
  • A free TV licence for those aged 75 or over who meet the criteria.
  • Help with NHS costs, including dental treatment and glasses, when you receive Guarantee Credit.
  • Cold Weather Payments (or Winter Heating Payment in Scotland).
  • Eligibility for the Warm Home Discount, a £150 electricity bill reduction.
  • Support for Mortgage Interest – a repayable loan with interest, usually settled when you sell or transfer the property.

Winter Fuel Payment and Pension Credit

Pension Credit is no longer a general requirement for the Winter Fuel Payment. For winter 2026/27, people born on or before 27 June 1960 who usually live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland can receive between £100 and £300, depending on circumstances. Payments are recovered if total income exceeds £35,000. Scotland runs a separate Pension Age Winter Heating Payment scheme.

How to Claim and Request Backdating

Start with the free official Pension Credit calculator for an estimate. If it cannot assess your case, contact the Pension Service. You can apply:

  • Online – via the official application page if you have already claimed your State Pension.
  • By telephone – call 0800 99 1234, Monday to Friday, 8 am to 6 pm.
  • By post – download the claim form or request one over the phone.

Have your National Insurance number, bank details, and information on income, savings and investments ready (including your partner’s details where applicable). You may ask for up to three months of backdating if you were eligible during that period, and you can begin an application up to four months before reaching State Pension age. Organisations such as Age UK or Citizens Advice can help with the form, and you can request a mandatory reconsideration if you disagree with a decision.

Pension Credit Checklist

  1. Confirm your State Pension age and your partner’s, if relevant.
  2. Gather pension statements, benefit details and savings balances.
  3. Note any caring responsibilities, disability benefits and housing costs.
  4. Use the official calculator or request a full benefits check.
  5. If you apply, enquire about backdating options.
  6. After an award, verify which extra supports need a separate application.

Remember, owning a home, having savings or receiving a private pension does not by itself answer the eligibility question – always check rather than assume.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Pension Credit paid automatically with the State Pension?

No. It is a separate benefit that requires an application; receiving your State Pension does not mean you have been assessed for Pension Credit.

Can I claim Pension Credit while still working?

Working does not automatically disqualify you, but earnings are included in the assessment under the relevant rules. Your age, income and overall circumstances still need to be checked.

Can I recover years of missed Pension Credit?

A new claim can normally be backdated by up to three months if you were eligible during that period. It does not usually recover payments for earlier years.

Should I re‑apply if I was previously turned down?

A prior decision reflects the circumstances and rules at that time. Consider checking again after a change in income, a bereavement, new caring responsibilities, a qualifying disability benefit award, or when the annual rates change. If you already receive Pension Credit, report any relevant changes to the Pension Service promptly.
